This community was named for the elmtrees that lined the nearby Mound Prairiecreek. A post office was established at Elmtown in 1901 and remained in operation until 1906. It had only two businesses and ten settlers in 1933 and not long after, its population was estimated as 50 in the late 1930s. A factory was in operation in the 1940s and all that remained in the 1980s was a cemetery located at the crossroads. It was still listed on county highwaymaps torefer to the community's extension at that same time.
