History
The community in the 1880s established a school for black children in 1884. Some African-Americans had objected to a separate school and wanted to send their children to the school for white children. A report for the 1884-1885 school year stated that opposition to the school subsided.Enrollment peaked in the 2010–11 school year, when the district had 7,864 students. Enrollment decreased afterward due to a decline in casino jobs. Between 2010-2011 and 2014 its enrollment declined by 3%. In 2010 alone, the proposed budget called for 70 jobs to be cut. In 2016, the district had more than 7,500 students, giving it one of the largest enrollments among school districts in Atlantic County.
The district had been classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "CD", the sixth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.
