Eduardo Araya


Eduardo Osvaldo Araya Leüpin is a Chilean historian and political scientist specializing in contemporary history, political science, international relations, and democratic transitions in Latin America.
Trained as a historian at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, he earned a Ph.D. in Political Science with a specialization in his original discipline from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany.
Araya has hosted televised academic interviews on contemporary issues, designed to bridge the gap between academia and the public by fostering dialogue between scholars and audiences.
He has also been interviewed on regional and global political processes, offering comparative analyses of international affairs.

Academic career

Araya serves as a professor at the Institute of History at his alma mater, where he has taught courses on Contemporary Latin American History, Political Science, and the History of Political Thought.
Between 2007 and 2008, he served as Vice-Rector for Academic and Student Affairs at PUCV, a position from which he later resigned.
Afterwards, he presided over the Institute of History until 2011.
In May 2008, he was invited by the National Office of Electoral Processes of Peru to deliver the lecture “Electronic Voting, Political Participation and New Technologies” as part of the “Electoral Dialogue” conference series.
Between 2014 and 2017, he remained active giving lectures on contemporary history at his alma mater and other universities.
In July 2019, he delivered a conference at the Center for Advanced Studies, addressing the impact of the Treaty of Versailles on the political and social configuration of Germany during the interwar period. The lecture was part of the CEA academic program focused on the analysis of historical international processes.
His research focuses on processes of democratic transition and consolidation, Latin American populism, presidential campaigns, and the role of information technologies in citizen participation.
