Edoardo Turbil


Edoardo Turbil is an Italian classical pianist and academic. He serves as an Assistant Professor of Piano and Keyboard at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

Early life and education

Edoardo Turbil was born in Italy and began studying the piano at the age of four. Starting from the age of eleven to twenty-one, he studied in the private studio of Italian pianist Maria Tipo, receiving training rooted in the Italian pianistic tradition. He earned the Italian Conservatory Piano Diploma from the “Antonio Vivaldi” Conservatory in Alessandria. He continued advanced studies at the Pinerolo Music Academy and the Fiesole Music School, completing advanced piano courses.
Turbil obtained the Specialized Biennium in Classical Piano Performance from the “Girolamo Frescobaldi” Conservatory in Ferrara in 2014, graduating summa cum laude under the guidance of Andrea Lucchesini. From 2014 to 2016, he studied at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he completed a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance in the studio of Solomon Mikowsky.
In 2021, Turbil earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School as a member of the C. V. Starr Doctoral Piano Performance Program, studying with Yoheved Kaplinsky. His doctoral dissertation, Leone Sinigaglia: A Rediscovery of Brahms’s Italian Apostle, received the Richard F. French Doctoral Prize.

Career

Performance

Turbil has pursued an international career as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician, performing in Europe, Asia, and North America. His appearances include venues such as Teatro Regio in Turin, Shenzhen Concert Hall, Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Alte Oper Mozart Saal in Frankfurt, Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna, Teatro della Pergola in Florence, Zunfthaus zur Waag in Zurich, and the Central Conservatory of Music Recital Hall in Beijing.
As a concerto soloist, he has appeared with ensembles including the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, the New Juilliard Ensemble, Orchestra Filarmonica del ’900, and the Galilei Orchestra. In 2011, he was invited by the European Central Bank to represent Italy at the Cultural Days Festival, performing as a soloist and in duo with cellist Miriam Prandi.

Repertoire and specialization

Turbil’s repertoire includes works by Domenico Scarlatti, Muzio Clementi, Claude Debussy, Olivier Messiaen, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Enrique Granados, Isaac Albéniz, Manuel de Falla, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Antonio Soler, and Fazıl Say. He is also associated with the keyboard works of Domenico Scarlatti, an expertise developed through his studies with Maria Tipo. He has presented all-Scarlatti recital programs across China and released an all-Scarlatti album with the National Centre for the Performing Arts in 2025.

Teaching and academic work

Turbil served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Graduate Teaching Fellow at The Juilliard School between 2016 and 2021. In 2022, he held short-term teaching appointments at the Conservatory “Giuseppe Verdi” in Turin and the Conservatory “Pietro Mascagni” in Livorno. He joined the School of Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen in August 2022 as a Lecturer in Piano and Keyboard, and was promoted to Assistant Professor in August 2025. He is regularly invited to give masterclasses and to serve as a jury member for national and international piano competitions.

Recordings and publications

Turbil has released solo recordings on DaVinci Records, Centaur Records, and KNS Classical, featuring works by Brahms, Leone Sinigaglia, Prokofiev, Bach–Busoni, Villa-Lobos, Clementi, and Debussy. He has also edited and published piano works by Leone Sinigaglia with DaVinci Scores.

Awards and recognition

Turbil has received awards at international piano competitions, including the Gold Medal with High Distinction at the Manhattan International Music Competition, the Third Grand Prize and Prize for Best Performance of a Baroque Work at the Chicago International Music Competition, and First Place at the American Protégé International Piano and String Competition.
He has also received a nomination at the German Piano Award and special prizes at the Arcangelo Speranza International Piano Competition and the International Bach Competition in Sestri Levante, which he won at the age of ten. From 2013 to 2017, he was a recipient of the De Sono Scholarships, and in 2022 he received the Melvin Johns Fellowship.
