Eastern Dakota Clans: The Solution of a Problem¹ is a scholarly work, published in 1971 in ''American Anthropologist''. The main subjects of the publication include genealogy, sociology, circumpolar peoples, clan, anthropology, history, history of Vietnam, Black feminism, and ethnology. Although some anthropologists have categorically stated that the Eastern Dakota had patrilineal clans, the evidence is tenuous enough that the situation has been termed “puzzling.” I demonstrate here that the attribution of clans is based on an uncritical use of 18th and 19th century sources, none of which presents valid evidence for the existence of clans, and conclude the clans never actually existed..
