Charles Hindenlang

Charles Hindenlang was a Swiss painter and glass artist.

Early life

Hindenlang was born in Basel on 1 October 1894.
After completing school, he began an apprenticeship in a shipping company. In 1911 he joined Karl Schneider as an apprentice decorative painter. In 1914 he attended the Basel trade school and later studied autodidactically with Fritz Baumann, and Jakob Mumenthaler, a brother of the architect.

Work

Hindenlang was part of the artists' collective. They are known as Basel's classical generation of painters and achieved their breakthrough in 1907 at a joint exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel. The artists maintained a friendly exchange with the Basel artist group Das neue Leben, founded in 1918, and had a significant influence on the development of Basel painting.
