Calocomus rodingeri

Calocomus rodingeri is a large desert beetle, measuring up to. It is highly elusive, rare and poorly known, found in the coastal desert region of Ica, in southern Peru. The type specimen is held at NMNH United States National Museum, Washington DC, USA.
The species has been found several times, since rediscovery in 2007, in riparian woodland oases around the Nasca, Ica region, Peru.
The species is associated with both huarango espino dry forest and associated marginal seasonal river reed beds of Arundo donax and Phragmites. It might also have a lifecycle association with Salix humboldtiana where adults have also been found. It is thought that the larvae may live in, and consume, the reed root balls until adult development after several years.
