Brevoort River


The Brevoort River is a short river in Mackinac [County, Michigan|Mackinac County] on Michigan’s Upper [Peninsula of Michigan|Upper Peninsula]. It drains Brevoort Lake within the Hiawatha [National Forest] and meanders about 9.8 miles south to Lake Michigan, west of St. Ignace.

Course

The river begins at the outlet of Brevoort Lake and follows a low-gradient, winding course through forest and wetlands to Lake Michigan. The Little Brevoort River enters Brevoort Lake upstream; the lake’s outflow forms the Brevoort River to the south.

History and management

A low outlet structure regulates levels on Brevoort Lake and controls initial flows to the Brevoort River. The structure appears in the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy dam inventory as a USDA Forest Service facility at approximately 45.9874°N, −84.9363°W. Recreation facilities associated with the lake and outlet area are managed by the Hiawatha National Forest.
