Bembidion
Bembidion is the largest genus of beetles in the family Carabidae by number of species. All species are small and move very fast. Most of them live close to water. The genus has a biantitropical distribution, meaning they are found in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, but not in the tropics. In warmer regions it is substituted by closely related Tachys and other genera.
Taxonomy
There have been many attempts to divide it into smaller genera, most notably by René Jeannel in 1941 and by G.G. Perrault in 1981, but none of them have been generally accepted.This genus is divided into numerus subgenera, some of which are elevated to full genus rank by various authors; as noted above, however, no universally accepted way of splitting the genus exists yet. Bembidion subgenera include:Actedium Motschulsky, 1864Ananotaphus Netolitzky, 1931Andrewesa Netolitzky, 1931Antiperyphanes Jeannel, 1962Antiperyphus Jeannel, 1962Aptenidium Habu & Ueno, 1955Apteromimus Wollaston, 1877Armatocillenus Dupuis, 1912Asioperyphus Vysoky, 1986Aureoplataphus Netolitzky, 1943Australoemphanes Toledano, 2005Bembidion Latreille, 1802Bembidionetolitzkya E.Strand, 1929Bembidromus Toledano, 2000Blepharoplataphus Netolitzky, 1920Bracteon Bedel, 1879Chilioperyphus Jeannel, 1962Chinocillenus Netolitzky, 1942Chlorodium Motschulsky, 1864Cillenus Samouelle, 1819Cyclolopha Casey, 1918Desarmatocillenus Netolitzky, 1939Diplocampa Bedel, 1896Ecuadion Moret & Toledano, 2002Emphanes Motschulsky, 1850Endosomatium Wollaston, 1877Euperyphus Jeannel, 1941Eupetedromus Netolitzky, 1911Furcacampa Netolitzky, 1931Gnatholymnaeum Sharp, 1903Gondwanabembidion Toledano, 2005Hirmoplataphus Lindroth, 1963Hoquedela Müller-Motzfeld, 1988Hydriomicrus Casey, 1918Hydrium LeConte, 1847Hypsipezum Alluaud, 1917Jammuphanes J.Schmidt & Marggi, 2014Jedlickion Toledano, 2008Josefia Toledano, 2000Leuchydrium Casey, 1918Limnaeoperyphus Nakane, 1963Lindrochthus Maddison, 2012Liocosmius Casey, 1918Lymnaeum Stephens, 1828Melomalus Casey, 1918Metallina Motschulsky, 1850Microserrullula Netolitzky, 1921Microsinocys Toledano, 1998Necpericompsus Netolitzky, 1935Neja Motschulsky, 1864Neobembidion Bousquet, 2006Neoemphanes Habu, 1978Nepha Motschulsky, 1864Nesocidium Sharp, 1903Nipponobembidion Habu & Baba, 1968Notaphemphanes Netolitzky, 1920Notaphocampa Netolitzky, 1914Notaphus Dejean, 1821Nothocys Jeannel, 1962Notholopha Jeannel, 1962Nothonepha Jeannel, 1962Notoperyphus Bonniard de Saludo, 1970Ochthedromus LeConte, 1847Ocydromus Clairville, 1806Ocyturanes Müller-Motzfeld, 1986Odontium LeConte, 1847Omoperyphus Netolitzky, 1931Omotaphus Netolitzky, 1914Pacmophena Jeannel, 1962Pamirium Netolitzky, 1920Paraprincidium Netolitzky, 1914Pekinium Csiki, 1901Peryphanes Jeannel, 1941Peryphidium Tschitscherine, 1895Peryphiolus Jeannel, 1941Peryphodes Casey, 1918Peryphophila Netolitzky, 1939Peryphus Dejean, 1821Philochthemphanes Netolitzky, 1943Philochthus Stephens, 1828Phyla Motschulsky, 1844Plataphus Motschulsky, 1864Plocamoperyphus Jeannel, 1962Politophanes Müller-Motzfeld, 1998Princidium Motschulsky, 1864Pseudometallina Netolitzky, 1920Pseudoperyphus Hatch, 1950Pseudophilochthus Wollaston, 1877Pseudosinocys Toledano, 2005Pseudotrepanes Jeannel, 1962Sakagutia Ueno, 1954Semicampa Netolitzky, 1910Sloanephila Netolitzky, 1931Taiwanobembidion Habu, 1973Talanes Motschulsky, 1864Terminophanes Müller-Motzfeld, 1998Testediolum Ganglbauer, 1891Testedium Motschulsky, 1864Thaumatoperyphus Netolitzky, 1935Trechonepha Casey, 1918Trepanedoris Netolitzky, 1918Trepanes Motschulsky, 1864Trichoplataphus Netolitzky, 1914Zeactedium Netolitzky, 1931Zecillenus Lindroth, 1980Zemetallina Lindroth, 1976Zeperyphodes Lindroth, 1976Zeperyphus Lindroth, 1976Zeplataphus Lindroth, 1976
