B4407 road
B4407 road is a B‑class road in the county of Gwynedd, Wales. It serves as a scenic link across the upland moorland of central Snowdonia, connecting the B4391 near Llan Ffestiniog in the south to the A5 trunk road near Pentrefoelas in the north. Along its course the road passes through the village of Ysbyty Ifan and traverses a bleak upland landscape that includes bogs and small lakes.
Route
The B4407 begins on the moors above Llan Ffestiniog, turning off the B4391 at Pont yr Afon Gam. From here the road climbs across open moorland, reaching an elevation of about 380 m above sea level. It heads northwards across a sparsely populated landscape toward Llyn Conwy, passes the drovers’ spring of Ffynnon Eidda, and then bisects the moorland to reach the small village of Ysbyty Ifan. Beyond Ysbyty Ifan the B4407 continues northeastward, eventually descending to meet the A5 near the hamlet of Pentrefoelas.
History
According to historical road‑numbering records, the B4407 originally formed part of a longer route between Llan Ffestiniog and the coastal town of Conwy via Betws‑y‑Coed. During the 1930s and 1940s sections of the original B4407 were renumbered: the southernmost section became part of a re‑routed B4408 and later the A496, while sections north of Betws‑y‑Coed were reclassified as the B5106. Modern improvements to north–south road links in Wales, including the extension of the A470, have absorbed parts of the former B4407; today the B4407 designation remains only on the 13 km upland stretch between the B4391 and the A5.
