Arthur Eustace Morgan

Arthur Eustace Morgan was the eighth Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University.
Born in Bristol, England, he was educated at University College, Bristol and Trinity College, Dublin. After a career as a lecturer and professor of English Literature at the universities of Exeter and Sheffield, he was appointed the first Principal of University College Hull in 1926, remaining in situ until 1935.
He was the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University from 1935, until his resignation in 1937. This resignation was due to conflicting opinions with McGill's Board of Directors. His resignation letter read as follows:
Montreal, 17th April, 1937.
Dear Sir Edward:
For some time it has been apparent that you and the other members of the Board of Governors did not see eye to eye with me in regard to the relation of the Principalship to the Governors.
We have had several talks on the subject during the past year and it now seems clear to me that it would be in the best interests of the University for me to ask you to convey to the Board my request to be relieved of my office from the 31st May next. I gather from you that this course would be acceptable to the Board.
Yours sincerely,
A. E. Morgan
Returning to England in 1937, he became the Assistant Secretary, Ministry of Labour and National Service from 1941 to 1945. From 1954 to 1963 he was warden at Toynbee Hall.
