18 January: The Argentine peso continues to decline in value against the U.S. dollar, which is a source of concern for both businesses and individuals. There is talk of abandoning the Argentine peso for the US dollar.

May

13 May: Ricardo Gangeme, a prominent journalist known for exposing corruption, is found murdered in Trelew, Chubut Province.

August

31 August: A Líneas Aéreas Privadas Argentinas flight crashes during takeoff from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery. There are 65 fatalities – as well as injuries, some serious, to at least 34 people.

September

17 September: Armed robbers take six Banco de la Nación Argentina employees hostage in Ramallo, Buenos Aires. After several hours, the thieves try to escape in a car with three hostages. After a few meters, a special group of the provincial police, kill one of the suspects and the two hostages.

24 October: Argentine general elections are held with Fernando de la Rúa winning the Presidency with 48% of the vote, defeating Eduardo Duhalde.
