He also got involved in local politics. He served as the member and Chairman of Chandnandi Union Council. In 1964 he was elected to provincial Assembly of East Pakistan on the ticket of Muslim League. Later he joined the Awami League and was elected to parliament from Noakhali-14 as an Awami League candidate in 1973. He was re-elected in 1979.
