1990 Panay earthquake


The 1990 Panay earthquake occurred at 3:41 p.m. local time on 14 June 1990 on the island of Panay in Visayas, Philippines. With a measured moment magnitude of 7.1, the earthquake left eight dead, 41 injured, and an estimated damage of 30 million.

Earthquake

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the epicentre was located in the vicinity of Culasi, Antique, on Panay Island. The earthquake had a depth of and was produced in the collisional zone off the western side of Panay Island by a fault movement. However, the United States Geological Survey recorded the epicentre to be in Barangay Union, Libertad, in the same province, and the depth of focus of the earthquake at, deeper than what is recorded by PHIVOLCS. The shaking was felt strongly across Western Visayas, while weak to moderate tremor was experienced in other parts of the Visayas, as well as in portions of Southern Luzon and Northern Mindanao. The highest reported PEIS intensity was VII in Culasi, Antique and Libacao, Aklan.

Impact

Antique

In Culasi, the majority of casualties were reported. A total of seven people were killed, while 31 others were injured. Several residential and commercial buildings collapsed and were damaged, along with four bridges. Fissures were recorded in two barangays as well as an upliftment in Barangay Bagacay. Landslides also occurred along the slope of Mt. Madya-as.

Aklan

Most structural and infrastructural damage was recorded in the province of Aklan. A number of residential buildings, two churches, and a river control project were damaged, while five highway bridges suffered partial damage in Libacao. The public market and Baptist Church, including its icons, suffered substantial damage in Balete. A rice mill and the rural health center were destroyed, while some bridges and another public market were partly damaged. One home reportedly collapsed as the others sustained partial destruction. A fissure was also recorded in a river. In Madalag, cracks appeared on the municipal and district hospital. In the capital, Kalibo, slight damage occurred to some homes made of ceramics, the Aklan Science High School, and a cinema. The same goes with the Kalibo Cathedral, as it endured cracks on its walls. In Numancia, there was a sand boil observed. In Altavas, cracks were found on the walls of a church, while the town's wharf and a holy icon within the same church were ruined. In Makato, the sports complex, as well as the posts and beams of the public market, were damaged.

Iloilo

The earthquake also affected Iloilo province, particularly in Calinog, wherein the Catholic Church and certain buildings of the Philippine Constabulary Regional Command were damaged.

Capiz

In Capiz, effects were noted in Cuartero, where multiple houses and a church sustained damage, and in Sigma, where a bridge and a communication tower were harmed.
