An attempt by high-ranking ministers Derek Quigley, Jim McLay, and Jim Bolger to replace Muldoon as prime minister with the deputy prime minister Talboys collapsed as a result of Talboys' unwillingness to actively campaign against Muldoon.
Three by-elections occurred.
