Šmarje–Sap

Šmarje–Sap is a settlement in the Municipality of Grosuplje in central Slovenia. The area is part of the historical region of Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Central Slovenia Statistical Region.

Name

Šmarje–Sap is a compound name. The first part of the name, Šmarje, was attested in 1347 as sand Marien. It is a contraction of the old locative form *šent Marije ' Saint Mary', referring to the local church. The second part of the name, Sap, was attested in 1763–1787 as Sapp oder Ispe. The name is derived from the Slovene common noun sap 'embankment'.

History

Šmarje–Sap was created as a settlement in 1961 through the merger of the formerly separate villages of Šmarje and Sap.

Landmarks

The parish church from which the settlement gets its name is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ljubljana. It is a 13th-century Romanesque building that was extended and restyled over the centuries. A defence tower that was part of a defence enclosure round the church erected to protect the local population against Ottoman raids survives.
