The station was opened on 2 July 1941 as part of the then Uwajima Line which ran from to. Subsequently, the track of the then Yosan Mainline was extended westwards from and linked up with the Uwajima Line at on 20 June 1945. The Uwajima Line and its stations, including Takamitsu, then became part of the Yosan Mainline from that date. At that time, the station was operated by Japanese Government Railways, later becoming Japanese National Railways. With the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, control of the station passed to JR Shikoku.
