Floods in Venezuela

Venezuela experiences annual flooding due to intense and prolonged rainfall. This leads to river overflows and landslides, particularly in mountainous and coastal regions. The Guaire River, which flows through Caracas, is prone to flooding due to its sharp curves and debris accumulation.

History

In December 1999, a significant flooding event known as the Vargas Tragedy occurred, resulting in an estimated 10,000 to 30,000 fatalities and $1.79 to $3.5 billion USD in damages. In 2020, climate-related disasters in Venezuela led to $30 million USD in economic losses. By 2023, the number of individuals directly affected by such disasters had decreased to 112.
